Only 39 minutes of play: Tomic suffers a record-breaking defeat

Bernard Tomic has suffered another setback after falling to number 207 in the world rankings.

In the final of the Challenger tournament in Fairfield, USA, the listless Australian suffered a record-breaking defeat: he lost to local hero Learner Tien in just 39 minutes. In the end it is 6:0 and 6:1 in favor of the first-seeded American.

It has been known since the Stuttgart native’s first round match at the ATP Masters 1000 tournament in Miami in 2014 that Tomic shows little interest in tennis, even on the court. There, the now 31-year-old lost against Jarkko Nieminen 0:6 and 1:6 in just 28 minutes – the fastest defeat in the history of the ATP tour.

The descent of top talent

Another setback for Tomic, who was once ranked 17th in the world. The Australian, who was the youngest player ever to win a match at the Australian Open at the age of 16, has only been represented in Challenger tournaments for years, but has not been able to win a competition since 2018.
