Jannik Sinner has been collecting title after title in recent months. The question arises as to who can pose a threat to the world number one if this person does not have the first name “Carlos” and the last name “Alcaraz” in their passport.

Jannik Sinner showed Novak Djokovic his limits in the Masters final in Shanghai, as the Serb himself had to admit without hesitation after the match. It seems as if the South Tyrolean’s dominance is increasing with each passing week. Seven titles in 2024, including two Grand Slams, number one secured until the end of the year and 22 wins from the last 23 games.
And for many observers, this one defeat is currently the key. Carlos Alcaraz defeated the current industry leader in a thrilling final in Beijing in over three hours of play. It seems as if no other player can currently keep up with the pace, precision and nerve strength except the Spaniard. The doping allegations also leave the Italian pretty cold, at least on the court.
Jannik Sinner with third win in a row against Novak Djokovic
Jannik Sinner won for the third time in a direct exchange of blows with Novak Djokovic. It may also have something to do with the increasing age of the Serb, whose superiority on the court is no longer the same over other opponents.
But Jannik Sinner took the decisive step this year. At the moment it is difficult to imagine that a healthy Alexander Zverev or a Daniil Medvedev in top form could pose a threat to the world number one.
However, next year Jannik Sinner will have a new role as the top favorite for the big titles, which the 23-year-old also has to learn first. Maybe this is an opportunity for players not named Carlos Alcaraz. Or the Spaniard himself has to do it in the end. The fans would be happy about more direct duels.
