NEW YORK. Minnesota’s Swedish keeper <a href="https://www.archysport.com/2022/11/saturday-in-the-nhl-bruins-tie-nhl-record-in-landslide-6-1-win/" title="Saturday in the NHL | Bruins tie NHL record in landslide 6-1 win”>Filip Gustavsson did something last night that neither Auston Matthews, Connor McDavid, Alex Ovetjkin or Steven Stamkos could do this season.

Goal.

Well, as only the eighteenth goaltender in NHL history, the happy west bottom managed to put the puck in an empty cage in an away game against St. Louis.

– I just shot as hard as I could, he smiles after the historic achievement

Just nine seconds remained in the game, the Wild had the lead 3-1 and the home team’s box was abandoned.

So when Filip Gustavsson got hold of the puck right in his own goal yard, he didn’t hesitate.

He sent it off in a perfect arc across the court – and just over a second later it danced straight into the Blues box.

The moment after that, pure television puck joy erupted around the 26-year-old Swede – followed by a solid shower from the teammates’ water bottles in the dressing room afterwards.

No wonder, goalkeeper goals are extremely rare. It has only been done seventeen times before in the NHL’s roughly 100-year history – and “The Gus Bus” is only the second Swede to do it, after Linus Ullmark in the 2022-2023 season. In Wild’s club history, Filip is alone in the feat.

– We had a timeout just before and Marc-Andre Fleury, who was sitting on the bench, told me that I should shoot if I had the chance. I answered that yes, maybe I should, says the 26-year-old son of Skellefteå when he meets the media afterwards.

– When I then got the puck straight into my glove, I tried to drop it onto the ice as quickly as possible. There it lay perfectly and I shot as hard as I could.

The teammates are impressed.

– It was a really poisonous shot, grins star Kirill Kaprizov, for example.

Jonas Brodin had an assist for the Wild and Philip Broberg one for the Blues. Joel Eriksson Ek did not play because it turned out that he broke his nose when he was recently hit in the face by compatriot Adam Larsson’s elbow.
