English national team: English Football Association confirms the signing of Thomas Tuchel

Thomas Tuchel is the new coach of the England national football team. This was announced by the English association FA. His contract begins on January 1st. Nothing was initially known about the duration of the contract.

Tuchel should lead captain Harry Kane‘s team to their first title since 1966 at the 2026 World Cup. Tuchel, who is set to earn six million euros, is the Three Lions’ first German team manager and the third foreigner to take the post after Sven-Göran Eriksson and Fabio Capello.

The German can point to an “impressive list of coaching successes” and was “identified as a preferred candidate” in the selection process, the FA said. The contract was signed on October 8th. On Tuesday, various media outlets unanimously reported on an agreement between the association and Tuchel.

Tuchel will succeed Gareth Southgate

The Football Association has been looking for a new head coach since Gareth Southgate resigned after the European Championship final defeat against Spain in July. Southgate was in office for eight years. After his resignation, former U21 coach Lee Carsley looked after the team on an interim basis.

Tuchel enjoys a very good reputation in England and was team manager of Chelsea FC from January 2021 to September 2022, and won the Champions League with the team in 2021. Tuchel has been without a job since the summer after his contract with FC Bayern Munich, which originally ran until 2025, was terminated.

In addition to Tuchel, Pep Guardiola was also brought into play in the English media for the position at the Three Lions. The Spaniard is under contract with Manchester City until the end of the season.
