On Wednesday, England presented Thomas Tuchel as the new national team captain and permanent replacement for Gareth Southgate in the national team.

Tuchel has a fine record from club teams, but former Manchester United player Gary Neville thinks it is wrong for England to have a foreign national team captain.

– I am shocked that England have brought in Thomas Tuchel. I don’t want it to be about Thomas Tuchel. I am shocked that England have chosen to bring in a foreign coach. I think we are damaging our own coaching program and we are also damaging our brand. Tuchel will receive an incredible amount of criticism if he does not do well and reach out to the group, says Neville in the podcast “The Overlap” and continues:

– He might go and win a championship and be successful for three or four years, but something tells me that it is not right and it does not feel right with Tuchel as the national team captain for England.

Podd colleague Jamie Carragher is on the same track.

– It is embarrassing that we as a nation say that we need a foreign coach to make us successful. I have always thought that an England national team captain should be English. I will never think differently about it.
