Provincial baseball semifinal: excitement and surprises

Camagüey, Oct. 16. – With five of the six teams already classified, the first-category provincial baseball semifinal will begin a decisive competitive journey on the 22nd of this month.

The last vacant place will be defined this Thursday the 16th between Jimaguayú and the surprising Santa Cruz del Sur, a match that, in the regular period, was suspended in southern venues due to the rain, when both teams were tied at 5 runs at the height of the fifth episode.

The southerners, led by former softball athlete Maritza Toledo Soca, have had a superior performance compared to the previous season, and their possible inclusion in the next stage would be the result of sporting growth on the field.

Jimaguayú shows a group full of young players, with the additional merit of having been the only one in its group to overthrow the powerful team of the Príncipes de Camagüey who, by the way, go into the next period with an enviable letter of introduction: 11 victories in 12 matches held.

The rest of the insured are Céspedes, Esmeralda, Guáimaro and Sierra de Cubitas, all with a very similar level of play, and parity of options to attend the title discussion, presumably with the representative of the capital of Camagüey.

The Céspes natives bring together in their ranks players with experience in the National Series such as catcher Yan Rey Pomares, and outfielders Luis González Azcuy and Michael Thompson.

For Esmeralda’s people, the contribution of Pedro Smith has been fundamental, who has hit 4 home runs so far, while for Guáimaro their pitchers stand out: Yonimiller Mendoza and Reinier Elías.

Florida, Vertientes and Nuevitas had a qualifier to forget, the only one that left the tournament without victory, since its main shooter, already with experience in the National Series, Mario Marzo, had an opaque tournament.

According to the organization chart released by the local baseball authorities, on the first day of the upcoming stage, Céspedes will receive Guáimaro, and Sierra de Cubitas will receive Esmeralda.

As host, the current monarchs of Camagüey will wait for the winner between Jimaguayú and Santa Cruz del Sur.

The championship regulations establish double games starting at 10:00 am, and the status of host and visitor will alternate in each match.

The round-robin system will be applied, and qualifying results no longer count. This segment concludes on the last day of the current month. (Gilberto Rodríguez Rivero/Radio Cadena Agramonte Collaborator) (Photo: Taken from the Internet)
