EC Heartbreak: Kristian Karlsson and Stina Källberg’s Narrow Miss for Table Tennis Medals

The French pair Simon Gauzy/Prithika Pavade won 3-2 (8-11,7-11,11-4,11-9,11-8) and Källberg left the paddock in tears to play her first match in singles while Karlsson was bitten. Källberg had to be properly comforted.

It otherwise looked like an easy path to at least one bronze (two bronzes are awarded as there is no bronze match) when the team led 2-0. And at 2-1 in the set, it looked as if Sweden would get the victory after a French injury.

France looked like it might give up

With France leading 5-4 in the fourth set, Gauzy hit a ball and caused a violent twist in his body, and worst of all it took his left knee. He received treatment for a long time while the Swedish players put on their tracksuits.

After treatment, Gauzy did a couple of drills to see if the knee would hold up for games. The Frenchman gave the thumbs up and the match could continue. The French pair were able to win the fourth set 11-9 and then win the final set 11-8 after Karlsson hit a ball.

Gauzy got over his sore knee before hugging Pavade after the turn.
