Pique’s astonishing proposal for the overloaded calendar

Pique’s astonishing proposal for the overloaded calendar

In the midst of controversy over overloaded calendars, notably the arrival of the controversial Club World Cup, Gerard Piqué has raised the subject in recent hours. The former Barça player, critical on the subject, attacks UEFA and FIFA for their quest for profits with new competitions like the Nations League and the Club World Cup. During his speech at the Leaders Week Summit in London, Pique expressed his solidarity with current players who complain about the overload of matches and the risk of injuries. “There are too many games and now we see that the players are shouting: ‘we are getting injured’. There are matches every three days and we don’t have time to rest in summer,” points out Pique. According to him, the frequency of matches, combined with a lack of rest, exhausts players.

Championships with 16 teams?

To ease this burden, Piqué proposes reducing the number of teams in the national championships, suggesting a format of 16 clubs instead of the current 20. I think the number of matches should be reduced. We should convene all the leagues and tell them that instead of 20 teams, the competitions should take place with only 16 clubs,” believes Pique, judging it preferable to play fewer matches, but of better quality, thus offering a more exclusive experience for fans and a more manageable schedule for players.
