Sérgio Analyzes Chico’s Impressive Serie A Debut: The Importance of Humility in Football

A new Conceição shines in Italy. Practically 20 years after Sérgio played on the pitch in Serie A, representing Lazio, Parma and Inter Milan, his son Francisco plays for Juventus, and is still gaining space in the squad.

After recovering from the injury, he came off the bench and scored two goals, one of which was great against Leipzig, in the Champions League. At an event related to the Golden Boy award, held in Turin, Sérgio Conceição spoke to the Italian Sky Sports about his son:

«He started well… With his way of playing, his characteristics, good one-on-one, technique and speed, I knew he could do well in Italy. Now he has to add other things. You have to be humble, listen to the coach and teammates and listen to yourself to understand how to improve. The path ahead is not easy, he must work and be humble, but he knows what to do in this regard», guaranteed his father.

Asked if he will see the next Juventus-Lazio match, due to the symbols of the two clubs, Sérgio said: «As a fan of Italian football, I always watch these games. It’s good to have Francisco facing a team with which I won a lot and with whom I scored a historic goal [em 1998]. I’m sorry he’s not there [devido a suspensão]but it will be a good game», he recalled.

Without any major revelations about his future, being free on the market, – «I will participate in this event and we will see tomorrow», he said -, Sérgio was asked about what gives him the most pleasure when training young people.

«There were many who gave me satisfaction. I think for example of Luiz Díaz, he arrived at FC Porto from Barranquilla and after two years with us he went to Liverpool… There are many, each one has their own character and characteristics. The club is also important to allow the coach to do a good job in this regard», he said.

Later, at the round table at the aforementioned event related to Golden Boy, Sérgio spoke about his son again. Admitting that «to train a son you have to be a little crazy», Conceição recalled the impact of the loan to Ajax.

“He didn’t play that much but he understood what it means to make sacrifices. No longer with his mother and brothers, he understood the essentials of life, how to live alone and mature. He returned to Porto, had an extraordinary season and now he has arrived at Juventus,” he said.

«There were two big teams that wanted him, but I advised him to come to Juventus, in Italy, which is one of the biggest clubs in the world. I knew that, due to his characteristics, if he took control of the situation, he would make a difference, without making excuses, because Italy is great and it is a wonderful country. We needed humility, working harder for the team and doing other things with even more sacrifice. If he takes control of the situation he is on the right path, if he thinks that his teammates are not passing the ball or if he looks for excuses for the coach or the environment, that will not help him», he concluded.
