Derrick Rose reveals the main reason for his retirement

On September 26, Derrick Rose He put an end to his sports career after 16 seasons in the NBA. An announcement that caught many by surprise, but logical in the end, and even more so knowing his long history of physical problems, which have marked his career, especially during his time in the Chicago Bulls.

However, injuries have not been the main reason why the Chicago native guard chose to permanently retire from basketball in September. He told the reason this week on the podcast 520 Club from also a former player Jeff Teague.

“I have thought about it for a while, and I feel that now I have to dedicate myself completely to my children”he explained. “At first I didn’t know how to have that conversation with my oldest son, and when I told him at first he felt very sad. But when I continued talking to him he was more encouraged when he realized that he was going to be able to spend more time with his father. Since that moment, everything has been affection,” he acknowledged.

In addition, Rose gave as an example Carmelo Anthony’s relationship with his son Kiyan, who also plays basketball, to explain the reasons for his retirement to his children.

Likewise, the former Bulls and Knicks player, among other teams, admitted to having been mediating for some time about retirement, as Rose has faced a long history of physical problems throughout his playing career. However, wear and tear did not turn out to be the main reason, but rather the fact of dedicating himself fully to his family.

After 16 seasons in the league, the Englewood point guard achieved the milestone of being the youngest MVP in NBA history at 22 years old wearing the jersey of his hometown team, the Bulls. However, the career of one of the most prodigious point guards at an athletic level was cut short due to a serious knee injury in April 2012. Since then, nothing has been the same for Rose, who despite returning to the court, lost that spark that characterized him. Later, he was traded to the New York Knicks and went on to play for various teams, including the Cavaliers, Timberwolves, Pistons and Grizzlies.

The next January 4, 2025Derrick Rose will receive a tribute from the Chicago Bulls in the match that will take place against the New York Knicks, a team led by Tom Thibodeau, one of his greatest supporters. The retirement of the point guard’s #1 number, however, is still up for debate.
