DCU Superman Star David Corenswet in NFL Movie Mr. Irrelevant

Superman star David Corenswet drops the suit and cape for a totally different kind of movie that will probably leave you needing tissues at the theater. The DCU actor has taken on the lead role in an upcoming biopic about the origins of Mr. Irrelevant, the nickname of the last player selected in the NFL draft. The period piece is based on a true story that follows the lives of gaming’s most tragic stories.

Deadline reports that Corenswet will star in Skydance Sports’ Mr. Irrelevant as John Tuggle, who was the last pick in the 1983 NFL draft. Long Shot director Jonathan Levine is set to direct the sports pic, while Reacher showrunner Nick Santora will handle scripting duties. The film is based on the Mr. Irrelevant name given to recent NFL draft picks, recently made famous by San Francisco quarterback Brock Purdy, who is now one of the sports franchise’s top stars. Of course, the upcoming sports biopic won’t tackle this player at all, but instead will follow a person whose life story will most likely touch the heartstrings.

The true story behind John Tuggle’s journey to the NFL is still inspiring but tragic. Drafted by the New York Giants in 1983, Tuggle was an NFL running back who had a short-lived career in the league, due in part to outside circumstances. He was involved in a car accident that seriously injured him, before being diagnosed with cancer and passing away in 1986. Yet, despite the physical and mental obstacles he unexpectedly encountered, Tuggle persevered and never let his situation affect his desire to play in the NFL and help his teammates succeed.

David Corenswet charges his film career

After finishing production on James Gunn’s Superman, Corenswet puts his new muscle and weight gain to good use in Mr. Irrelevant. However, before either project hit the big screen, Corenswet slowly gained relevance through supporting roles. He impressed audiences opposite Mia Goth in Pearl, the middle part of Ti West’s acclaimed horror trilogy. Although Corenswet plays a sympathetic character in this one, he also spread his wings and played one of the human “antagonists” in this year’s Twisters. He’s always had the acting chops to support himself as a leading man, but he’s only now getting the prime opportunity to showcase his talents on the big screen.

On television, it was undoubtedly Corenswet who made the most noise. He appeared in HBO’s We Own This City with Jon Bernthal, while also playing a significant role in Netflix’s The Politician. The actor also had a brief role on House of Cards as Claire Underwood’s boyfriend when she was 20. Corsenswet has been an instant-and-you-missed-it presence at times, but it’s safe to say that Superman, and now Mr. Irrevlant, is about to put him on the map for good. Provided he’s great in the roles, of course.

Written and directed by James Gunn, Superman is Warner Bros.’ first film. rebooted DC Universe to focus on the titular hero of the comics. It presents a new version of Man of Steel following Henry Cavill’s departure from the role, honoring the character’s roots as “the embodiment of truth, justice and the American way.”
