Live ticker US election 2024: Kamala Harris: “Donald Trump is a dubious man”

Almost three weeks before the election, the American government of President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris has forgiven tens of thousands of citizens’ student loans worth 4.5 billion dollars (4.15 billion euros). As the White House announced in Washington on Thursday, around 60,000 teachers, nurses, social workers, soldiers, firefighters and others will benefit.
This brings the total loan forgiveness approved by the government to “more than $175 billion for more than 4.8 million Americans,” it said. This includes, among other things, a US government program that gives civil servants 120 monthly installments or ten annual installments have paid, the remaining amount of the student loan will be forgiven.

Tens of millions of Americans are in debt due to loans they took out to finance their studieswhich is often very expensive in the United States. Democratic presidential candidate Harris announced during her campaign that she would work to end “the unreasonable burden of student debt.” Higher education must become more affordable “so that college can be a ticket to the middle class.”

According to the Education Data Initiative, nearly 43 million Americans had current student loans that still need to be repaid last year. Donald Trump believes loan forgiveness is unfair to those who have fully repaid their debts.
