Futsal | The French women are definitely sinking

Futsal | The French women are definitely sinking

Only a few weeks after the fourth place of the French men’s futsal team during their first World Cup, their female counterparts have also just made history in the worst possible way.

A first half unworthy of their standards

On the occasion of the first Women’s Futsal World Cup in history, which will take place in November 2025 in the Philippines, the nations will compete in the main qualifying round. And for that, the French faced Ukraine in Teplice, in the Czech Republic. Futsal players represent an immense jewel of our country. Indeed, during their first twelve official meetings, the Blues simply never won.

For the occasion, Pierre-Étienne Demillier’s players (60th in the world) face the Ukrainian European vice-champions. We might as well tell you that the balance of power is as balanced as a poster between the immense LOSC and the little Thumb from Madrid. But French women are not afraid, to say the least. The latter will multiply the affronts in this part. First of all, Salomé Alberbide not only opened the scoring during her first selection, but she also became the first woman to score for the France team in a match in official competition. Add in the goal from captain Alexandra Atamaniuk, and you get a 2-0 score at the break. Extremely heartbreaking.

The French futsal players commit the irreparable

Returning from the locker room, the Ukrainians reduced the score, and maintained their hope of a much-desired comeback. But the Blues do not give in, and worse, they drive home the point at the very end of the match through Fiona Bitterlin. The French women’s futsal team not only won 3-1, but lost at the same time the first victory in its history in an official competition match. After the 13th attempt please.

With this success as unexpected as it was disastrous, the French women took the lead in their group. A position that would allow them to obtain the ticket for the elite round for the next World Cup. In short, an unbearable alignment of the planets. It took less than a year after the creation of the women’s national team to see them (already) spin bad luck. Whether we like it or not, Wednesday October 16, 2024 will forever remain the Day of Infamy of the futsal section of the FFL.
