In 1972the club of judo de Barsac was created in Gironde under the leadership of Raymond Ribes, its founder. The same year, Philippe Courtiade discovered judo on the tatami mats of the new club. It was the start of a long love story between this Barsacais, who died last month, and combat sport.
In his life, he had three things: his daughter, his job and judo.
It is with this formula that Raymond Ribes presents Philippe Courtiade, while consulting a large album photo retracing the history of his club.
Throughout the pages, Philippe Courtiade returns very regularly. Of the photos and articles of cut-out presses follow one another, on which the name and image of the judoka appear.
On the first pages, Philippe Courtiade is still a child.
When he started, he was 8 years old. He proudly represented the town through judo.
Then, over the years, the years pass, the career lengthens and theattachment at the club is felt. “In the 70s/80s, he won everything. He was part of a formidable team that scared the whole of Gironde,” comments the founder.
Participation in the French championship
In 1985, he obtained his brown belt and he is considered “the leader of his generation.” The same year, he even became champion of Gironde. A few pages later, two years later, it is black belt which he wears and he wins again the Gironde championship all categories.
In the summer of 89, Philippe Courtiade represented his club at the French championships for the second time.
A return 24 years later to Barsac
“He was a boy who was not talked about, except in the associative environment in which he shone,” recalls Raymond Ribes. The latter would like to add the importance that this judoka had for the youngest: “ He set an example “. A role that he resumes in 2018, 24 years later his departure for the Toulenne club.
An important return for the Barsacais club and its founder: “It’s what I had always hoped for. We recovered a club kid and a black belt, 5e And. Which is not common.” This new cycle coincides with the arrival at the club of his daughter, Coralie, today president of the sports association.
Close relationship with his daughter
“I knew him from having seen him accompany Coralie on fights, with whom he had a very close relationship. But I really got to know him when he arrived at the club,” recalls Mayito Gonzaleztrainer at the Barsac judo club. For him, Philippe Courtiade only lived for judo.
He accompanied the juniors and cadets to tournaments and gave them technical training. He was a very important person at the club.
This commitment is also found in the words of Raymond Ribes who saw him as “an essential part of the club” and as “someone who gave back what he had acquired”.
The creator of the association concludes by recalling that it was a “ valorous judoka and respected who knew how to pull young people up, with human qualities indisputable.”
A final tribute
The members of the club are keen to pay him a final tribute and welcome his granddaughter Juliette, born the day after her grandfather’s funeral and whose middle name is: Philippine.
