Cruzeiro had a goal disallowed in the match against Bahia, this Friday (10/18), at Mineirão, in the 30th round of the Brazilian Championship. In the 22nd minute of the second half, Kaio Jorge scored with a header, but VAR identified defender Lucas Villalba as being offside.

Villalba did not actually participate in the play, as the one who gave the header to Kaio was João Marcelo. However, the Argentine defender made it difficult for Gabriel Xavier, from Bahia, to reach the ball. When watching the replay on the monitor at the edge of the field, referee Flávio Rodrigues de Souza understood that there had been an irregularity.

The invalidated goal was greatly missed by Raposa, who equalized in the 36th minute of the final stage, with a goal scored by Luciano Rodríguez. Thus, coach Fernando Diniz completed the fourth game without a win in charge of the star club.

Commentators analyze

Despite the dissatisfaction of Cruzeiro residents, refereeing commentators stated that the final decision was correct. Paulo César de Oliveira, from Sportvand Márcio Rezende de Freitas, from Itatiaiaexpressed similar opinions: Villalba did not commit a foul, but “in the way” Gabriel Xavier to prevent João Marcelo’s assist for Kaio Jorge.

“We go to rule 11 to analyze. What does the rule say in a situation like this? Villalba is in an offside position and in the defender’s path. So, the rule says that the player who is in an offside position has to be punished for being in that position when. It affects the possibility of the opponent competing for the ball, because Gabriel Xavier is moving away precisely to try to compete for the ball”, declared PC de Oliveira, on the program Exchange of Passes.

“In the offside condition, if Villalba touched or interfered with the defender’s movement, the goal will be disallowed. Even if he didn’t touch the ball and it wasn’t even a foul”, highlighted Márcio Rezende, in the broadcast of Cruzeiro x Bahia on Itatiaia.

Fernando Diniz

Fernando Diniz disagreed with the refereeing of Cruzeiro x Bahia in relation to Kaio Jorge’s goal. For the celestial coach, defender Gabriel Xavier wouldn’t be able to make the cut even if Villalba wasn’t close.

“In my opinion, very badly canceled. If Villalba wasn’t there, he (Gabriel Xavier) would never have gotten to the ball the way he did. Villalba didn’t do anything, he fell alone.”

Cruise in Brasileirão

Cruzeiro is in eighth place in the Brasileirão, with 44 points in 30 rounds. The team won just one of the last 11 games, moving away from the qualifying group for the 2025 Copa Libertadores.

Raposa’s next match in Série A is against Athletico-PR, Saturday (10/26), at 6:30 pm, at the Ligga Arena, in Curitiba, for the 31st round.

In the middle of the week, the team from Minas Gerais will take the field for the first leg of the Copa Sudamericana semi-final. The clash with Lanús, from Argentina, will be on Wednesday (23), at 7pm, at Mineirão.
