The New York Yankees qualified for baseball’s World Series for the first time since 2009

The Yankees, famous New York baseball team, they qualified for the World Series, the Major League Baseball finals: it hadn’t happened for 15 years. At the Progressive Field stadium in Cleveland they beat the Cleveland Guardians 5 to 2 in the fifth game of the American League Championship Series, which determines the team that will go to the World Series against the winner of the other MLB league, the National League (they will be the New York Mets or the Los Angeles Dodgers).

The Yankees hadn’t won the American League since 2009. A three-run home run by Dominican left fielder Juan Soto in the tenth inning was crucial to the victory. Yankees right fielder Giancarlo Stanton, the series’ MVP, hit a two-run home run in the sixth inning.

The New York Yankees are the winningest team in MLB history: they have won the World Series 27 times, most recently in 2009 against the Philadelphia Phillies. Since their first participation in the championship round, in 1921 against the New York Giants, they have won a total of 225 games: no other team is less than 100 games away from this record (the Los Angeles Dodgers are in second place with 123 games won in the World Series).
