“The national badminton competition is being held in our town. What a blessing it is to have the opportunity to watch the big competition nearby and compete with amateurs from other regions.”
These are the words of Choi Won-young, president of the Suwon City Badminton Association, whom we met at the Suwon City Badminton Stadium, where a festival for badminton enthusiasts across the country was held.
About 3,000 players and their families participated in the ‘2024 Suwon Cup National Badminton Competition’ hosted and hosted by the Suwon City Badminton Association and sponsored by New Daily, and a total of 1,300 club members from 650 teams participated in the game.
President Choi, who held the ‘Suwon Cup National Badminton Competition’ for the second time this year following last year, showed his gratitude to the club members and his affection for the Suwon City Badminton Stadium, which was remodeled last March.
We met with President Choi on the 20th, who said he was happy that the quality of the competition and the participation of club members increased with each successive event.
The following is a Q&A with Association President Choi.
– How did you feel about taking part in the ‘2024 Suwon Cup National Badminton Competition’?
“We will be holding the competition for the second year in 2023. From what I can see, the quality of the competition and the participation of club members have increased, and the badminton skills have improved, and the base is expanding. In particular, this competition is better than last year. The age group has become younger. Last year, the 4050 generation clearly dominated the game, but this year, the participation of the 2030 generation increased significantly, and it was surprising that the skills of young players were as good as those of elite players. “I feel that we are on our way, and at the center of it all is the Suwon City Badminton Stadium, where the competition was held. We will strive to hold the Suwon Cup National Badminton Championship next year and the year after.”
– Was there anything difficult while preparing for this competition?
“Preparing for the competition is not something I do on my own. The competition cannot be held without the participation of club members. First of all, the large participation of club members in the Suwon area was of great help, and the association executives also contributed a lot of effort. However, due to the season, As fall approaches, participation in many competitions is the choice of club members, and although the dates of the competitions overlap, the key is how many club members from all over the country will attend our competition. “The degree is high, I’m just thankful.”

– Do you feel the popularity of badminton?
“This year, there was the Paris Olympics. More than anything, it seems like a boom started when Ahn Se-young won the gold medal in women’s singles. Elementary and middle school students came out holding their parents’ hands and took lessons. Then, they shared it on their social media and shared it with their friends. “I think this is the power of sports, as the students gathered together to practice.”
– If you would like to express your gratitude, including to badminton lovers.
“First of all, I would like to thank the club members in Suwon City. We have prepared a big competition, but if there is no participation, it is of no use. I would like to applaud our club members in Suwon area who always show a high level of participation.”
– Is there any last thing you would like to say?
“The people who helped us remodel Suwon City’s badminton stadium are Suwon Mayor Lee Jae-jun and National Assembly member Kim Seung-won. Mayor Lee Jae-jun is a person who is very affectionate and interested in our badminton. He is sad that the budget related to sports is always insufficient. Mayor Lee Jae-jun is the person who provides support despite the shortcomings, and Rep. Kim Seung-won is proud that the Suwon City badminton stadium is in his district, so he has a strong connection with badminton enthusiasts despite his recent illness. Thank you both for attending.
