The farce surrounding the Video Assistant Referee just doesn’t want to end in Austria.
An undisputed situation caused a stir at the weekend at the game between Austria Klagenfurt and Austria Vienna (to the match report >>>). In the seventh minute, a clear handball by Klagenfurt defender Jannik Robatsch was not whistled – VAR Manuel Schüttengruber also did not intervene afterwards.
“I also thought it would be a handball. But these days you never know what will come out,” Robatsch explained on Sky. “I wouldn’t have been too upset if they had given it to me.”
Gishamer: “Penalty would have been given”
After a short communication with the VAR, referee Gishamer allowed the game to continue without looking at the TV images – after the final whistle, the referee apologized for this.
“A penalty would have been given. Mistakes happen, making mistakes is human,” said Gishamer contritely. He noticed the handball, but the arm position was not clearly recognizable: “For me it was straight down, in the course of the jumping movement. Unfortunately, based on the TV pictures, I have to refute that.”
However, he didn’t blame his video assistant referee in the Meidlinger Keller: “If he thinks it’s a clear wrong decision, then he would have to get me out. At headquarters he had a different opinion. He also has a stressful, pressured situation. We’re sorry, but it happens.”
