For Bayer 04 Leverkusen it was considered a great success to convince Xabi Alonso to work with the “Werkself” for another season.
The Basque won the double with Bayer in the 2023/24 season and aroused the desires of other clubs with his successful work.
The 42-year-old will probably not stay in Leverkusen beyond the summer of 2025. The German Bundesliga club should therefore already be looking for possible successors.
“Sky” names specific names: Sebastian Hoeneß and Sandro Wagner are brought into play.

Hoeneß is tied to VfB Stuttgart until 2027. The 42-year-old German led the Swabians to the runner-up title last season. In the current season, VfB is in tenth place.
In the past, Hoeneß worked as head coach at TSG Hoffenheim and as a youth coach at FC Bayern Munich and RB Leipzig. He is said to enjoy a high reputation in Leverkusen.
Wagner is currently assistant coach of the German national team and has a contract in this position until after the 2026 World Cup. Premier League clubs are said to have already shown interest in the 36-year-old. After the European Championships, he was linked to a position at TSG Hoffenheim.
Spain or England?
Where could Alonso go in the future? According to Sky, two teams are interested.
Firstly, Real Madrid, where Alonso was already active as a player. In addition, Manchester City should specifically deal with the ex-midfielder. From the current perspective, a commitment to Liverpool FC will probably not work. Arne Slot has the reins firmly in his hand there.
Carlo Ancelotti is still working in Madrid at the moment. The Italian has a contract until 2026. Pep Guardiola is in the coaching chair in Manchester and the contract expires next year.
