Tua Tagovailoa wants nothing to do with padded helmet

Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa wants to return to action next Sunday, but he has no plans to wear extra protection to avoid suffering another concussion.

Asked Monday about the possibility that he was wearing a guardian capa padded helmet, when he returns to action, the 26-year-old athlete said he has no plans to do so and that it is a “personal choice”.

Tagovailoa was back practicing with his Dolphins teammates for the first time since Sept. 12, when he suffered a concussion during a game against the Buffalo Bills. It was his fourth in five years.

“I haven’t had any symptoms since the day after the match,” said the pivot at a press conference after training.

After the latest concussion, many wondered if Tagovailoa should seriously consider retiring from professional football. Even former hockey player Eric Lindros suggested he think about it.

“I wasn’t paying attention to all that,” Tagovailoa said of what people were saying about his future.

“I just have to be smart,” he added. That’s all. You have to be intelligent. Throughout my entire football career, I was a competitor, and that was my strength when I ran in high school and college. This is professional level, the best of the best, you just can’t afford to do that.”

In Tagovailoa’s absence, the Dolphins (2-4) went 1-3. It was Tyler Huntley who was the main quarterback used by the Miami team while the Hawaiian was on the sidelines. The latter, however, injured a shoulder in Sunday’s game against the Indianapolis Colts.

The Dolphins will return to action against the visiting Arizona Cardinals at Hard Rock Stadium.
