This Sunday the Jesús Suárez Valgrande sports center hosted the XX Puerta de Asturias National Judo Tournament, which marked the start of the 2024/25 season. A total of 87 judokas from Asturias and Extremadura gathered to face each other in exciting combats on three tatami mats in a day full of high-level judo.
The Lena Judo Club, despite having only three representatives, achieved great results. Diego Menéndez +100 kg and Marcos Fernández 81 Kg. climbed to the podium, obtaining the bronze medal in their respective categories, their partner Javier Álvarez did not suffer the same luck, competing for the bronze medal and finishing 5th. «These achievements reinforce the good work done by the club in the preparation of its athletes and predict a great season«, they point out from Judo Lena.
This tournament «It marked the official beginning of the judo season in Asturias, with intense combats and a two-hour competition where the judokas showed great technique and a strong sportsmanship. The Puerta de Asturias National Tournament has established itself as an important event in the regional calendar, attracting clubs from different communities and raising the competitive level«, they narrate from the Lenense club.
A Lena Judo Club that stands out «Our referee in the sports contest, José Manuel Iglesias continues his preparation for the title of national referee. With his participation in the Puerta de Asturias, Álvarez began his practical preparation to obtain the title of national referee, a goal that will be achieved on November 10 during the Spanish Junior Super Cup in Gijón where the exam will take place.«.
The Lena Judo Club has expressed its special gratitude «to all the volunteers who made the excellent organization of the event possible. Their dedication was key to ensuring that the day went smoothly and in perfect conditions, allowing the athletes to focus on what was most important: the competition.«.
With this promising start, the Lena Judo Club «looks to the future with optimism. The successes of Diego Menéndez and Marcos Fernández are an encouragement for the rest of the club’s judokas, who will continue to work hard in the upcoming competitions. Likewise, the progress of José Manuel Iglesias on his way to the title of national referee is another reason for pride«.
The XX Puerta de Asturias National Judo Tournament was not only an excellent platform for athletes, but also a key event for the development of judo in the region and offering growth opportunities for both judokas and referees.
