Success at the Swiss Indoors – Stricker makes it to the 2nd round of Basel – Sport

  • Thanks to a 6:4, 6:4 against Tallon Griekspoor, Dominic Stricker is in the round of 16 at the Swiss Indoors.
  • The Bernese serves strongly and only allows the only two break points in the very last game.
  • Stricker’s next opponent has not yet been determined.

As in 2022 and 2023, Dominic Stricker (ATP 258) will be in the round of 16 at the Swiss Indoors in Basel in 2024. In the 6:4, 6:4 against the Dutchman Tallon Griekspoor (ATP 35), the Bernese native, who was equipped with a wild card, showed a fine performance. His serve in particular was outstanding (14 aces).

A break with an announcement

Thanks to a courageous return to the baseline, Stricker made the early break in the third game of the opening set. As a result, the 2020 French Open junior winner was never in danger during his own service, so that the first round was dry after just 27 minutes.

Even in the second set, Griekspoor was virtually absent from Stricker’s serve. Conversely, this was not the case. Stricker got one break point in the 5th game and two break points in the 7th game, but was unable to take advantage of any of them. When the fourth opportunity followed in the 9th game, Stricker struck. After a forehand shot from Griekspoor went too long, the score was 5:4.

A brief flutter of nerves before the finish line

When Stricker was able to serve to win the match, he weakened slightly in service for the first and only time. Griekspoor had his first two break chances of the entire match. However, because the Dutchman missed both of them – the first of which was negligent with a simple volley into the net – Stricker ended the game a little later with his first match point. Griekspoor misjudged the net.

Thanks to this success against a top 40 player, Stricker is continuing the upward trend of the last few weeks. At the tournament in Stockholm, the 22-year-old beat, among others, the Italian Matteo Berrettini (ATP 42) and reached the quarter-finals.

Stricker’s opponent in the second round in Basel will be either Nicolas Jarry (CHI) or number 4 seed Holger Rune (DEN).
