On the sidelines of the 8th Palmengarten Ball in Frankfurt, Willi Weber reveals to RTL that he was surprised by 27-year-old Gina Schumacher’s decision to part with the name Schumacher. What does he think of it? “Everyone can do it however they want. It doesn’t really matter to me,” explains Weber when asked by RTL.

In an interview with the “Bild” newspaper, the former manager of Formula 1 legend Michael Schumacher then became very clear: “Why do you just give up such a big name? I don’t understand it! Giving up a name like that. That’s it a brand. He’s connected to her father. I wouldn’t have done that.” However, Weber also restricts that it is Gina’s decision, even if he disagrees.

Gina Schumacher became Gina Bethke

At the end of September, Gina Schumacher married her great love Iain Bethke in Mallorca. When she said yes, a lot changed for Schumi’s daughter – including her last name. Gina apparently decided to give up her dad’s famous name and use her husband’s name from now on. Gina Schumacher became Gina Bethke!

A sight that takes some getting used to for all fans – and also for Weber. What might appease the 82-year-old a little: The successful western rider has so far only renamed herself Gina Bethke on her Facebook profile; on Instagram you can still find her under Gina Schumacher. As Bild also reports, she hasn’t completely given up her famous name. Accordingly, she competed at a tournament in Texas under a double name, starting as Gina Schumacher Bethke. You don’t get rid of the Schumacher name so quickly.
