Jon Dahl Tomasson did everything he could for Behrang Safari to end his career.

That’s what the former MFF defender says the podcast “The Dog, the Cat, the Ice Cream”.

– He was manipulative and fake, he says of Sweden’s national team captain.

Before the 2020 season, Jon Dahl Tomasson took over as coach for Malmö FF. Markus Rosenberg had just hung up his boots and Behrang Safari was one of the favorites to become the new team captain, having worn the armband for much of the pre-season.

But when the corona-postponed season did start, it was Anders Christiansen who got the honor of becoming captain instead. Safari, on the other hand, had limited playing time and after a decisive mistake in the cup final loss against IFK Göteborg, the appearances became fewer and shorter.

In the podcast “Hunden, Katten, Glassen”, which is run by the blue and white profiles Pontus Wernbloom, Tobias Hysén and Mattias Bjärsmyr, the MFF profile now talks about how he experienced Sweden’s current national team captain as a coach.

“Manipulative, fake…”

– For me he was… You mustn’t forget, my worst coach is someone else’s best coach. But it was pretty clear. I was 36 years old and had a trainer who wanted to push me into the shoes and do everything to make me quit. Manipulative, fake and everything it was about, says Safari.

He goes on to explain that it wasn’t quite what he expected in the final years of his career.

– I could hear how he went and talked to all his players, but when he talked to me, he talked about paintings and works of art. Then he went to someone else and talked corners, says Safari.

Safari chose to end his career after the 2020 season, and was already transparent with his feelings for the coach. Among other things, he poked Tomasson when the coach missed MFF’s golden match due to corona.
