Dominic Thiem disputed, in the ATP 500 in Viennahis last match as a professional tennis player. In the first round of the Austrian tournament, the local player and winner of the 2020 US Open, fell in his duel against Luciano Darderi by 7-6 (6) y 6-2 which included an emotional match point followed by a small tribute.
When the match was going 5-2 and 40-0 in favor of the Italian in the last set, people began to shout and cheer for the Austrian in what later ended up being his last point as a professional player. After a small rally, the Italian-Argentine closed the match with a smash. Then, again under the howl of the crowd, the former world No. 3 hugged Darderi at the net and then applauded him on his way to the bench.
Finally, there was a small tribute to someone who knew how to be one of the great tennis players in recent times and many times classified as successor to the “Big 3”. In it, Thiem symbolically hung his racket in front of an audience that did not stop showing him affection throughout the match.
Applauded at home until the last minute, the Austrian left the field signing autographs for the little ones in a venue that did not stop resounding with shouts of support for the last great idol of Austrian sports.
