The speed of the Catalans in particular repeatedly caused problems for Bayern, especially the lightning-quick Raphinha. Less than a minute had passed in Barcelona when Manuel Neuer had to reach behind him for the first time – it was Bayern’s fastest ever goal in the Champions League. Raphinha gave Neuer no chance in a one-on-one, rounded the goalkeeper and was able to slot into the empty goal to take the early lead.

Kane celebrates late

Harry Kane scored the supposed equalizer in the 10th minute, but was just offside. This marked the beginning of Bayern’s strongest phase and eight minutes later Kane was finally able to celebrate after an assist from Serge Gnabry (18′).

Robert Lewandowski’s 2-1 score (36′) turned the game around; Fermín López’s push into Min-Jae Kim’s back during the break went unpunished. Afterwards Raphinha continued his show. The Brazilian scored two more times (45th, 56th) and was ecstatically celebrated by the home fans for his hat trick when he was substituted for returning Dani Olmo (75th).

Kompany makes four substitutions

In the 60th minute, Kompany was forced to make changes and made four substitutions. Leroy Sané came in for Michael Olise, Kingsley Coman for Serge Gnabry, Leon Goretzka for Joao Palhinha and the recently injured Jamal Musiala replaced Thomas Müller. This brought some calm to the game, but also because the Blaugrana largely stopped their offensive efforts.

For the first time in the history of the competition, Bayern have lost three Champions League away games in a row. After the defeat at Aston Villa and Real Madrid in the previous season, Bayern suffered the next setback in the reformed Champions League and are therefore only in 23rd place in the table after three match days.

Barcelona is in 10th place with six points. The first eight teams qualify directly for the knockout phase, places nine to 24 have to go to the playoffs.
