Mataró will have an international 3X3 basketball tournament

Mataró wants to have a sports championship of international scope and will rely on basketball, specifically 3×3 basketball. The development of this great event is still very green, but the budget agreement between Junts per Mataró and the municipal government includes an investment destined for the organization of the event itself by the City Council, which will also seek external financing.

The promotion of an international sports championship was part of Junts’ electoral program and now the Mataró City Council endorses the commitment by including it in the Mandate Plan and Investment Plan that has been negotiated with the government’s external partner.

It will be the Opportunities Office, according to the agreement signed between Junts, the PSC and ECPM, which will collaborate in “raising external financing for the development of the Mataró Capital Baloncesto 3×3 project.”

On the other hand, the Mataró City Council will invest up to 500,000 euros in 2025 in the repair of the Palau Josep Mora, a historic facility located in the heart of the city – next to the Central Park – to adapt it to current safety regulations.

3×3 basketball, an increasingly popular modality

3×3 basketball has experienced explosive growth in popularity, especially among young people, thanks to its dynamic format and its proximity to the urban essence. This type of basketball, played on a half-court with teams of three players, has captivated a younger audience looking for quick thrills and intense games. Since its introduction at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, its presence has been increasing, consolidating itself as an attractive and popular discipline. At the Paris 2024 Games, 3×3 continued to gain followers, with 4,000 people filling the stands daily and millions of viewers following the competitions online and on television.

In addition to the success in the stadiums, the digital presence of 3×3 basketball has grown exponentially. During Paris 2024, more than 132 million views were recorded and a growth of 613% in digital presence compared to Tokyo 2020, according to FIBA data. These figures reflect the universal appeal of this modality, which also achieved high television audiences, with almost 2 million people following the women’s final between Germany and Spain. These data underline the ability of 3×3 to connect with new audiences and consolidate itself as a growing discipline ahead of the 2028 Los Angeles Games.
