Madrid basketball continues to grow. The FBM has started the 2024/25 season with 2,970 teams registered in the different categories of the federated competitions, 161 more than last year.
The preferred categories, with 68 more teams; The senior regional ones, with 59, and the first ones (Junior, Cadet and Infant), with 37, are the ones that have grown the most in a year that represents a new participation record.
The percentage of women’s teams this season is 36.5 percent, although in minibasketball, the base of the pyramid, it amounts to 44.5 percent (slightly higher than last year’s 44.1) of the total of 620 teams, which which demonstrates once again the growth of women’s basketball from the earliest ages.
Since the 1997/98 season, when the number of registered teams was 867, Madrid basketball has grown uninterruptedly, year after year, with the only parenthesis of the covid pandemic (2020/21), when there was a slight decline, more than compensating in the following years.
In the last four seasons alone (since 2021), the number of registered teams has increased by 656, from 2,314 in 2021 to the current 2,970.
