Danielle Collins postpones her resignation. Behind the decision is a personal struggle that goes far beyond the tennis court.

Munich – Danielle Collins announced her retirement from sport after the current season at the beginning of the year. Her plan was to focus on her “ultimate dream” of “raising a family.” But now the 30-year-old American has made a surprising turnaround and announced on Instagram that she will continue her career and return to the tour in 2025.

Danielle Collins continues her career

In 2018, Collins had a uterine cyst removed. She also suffers from endometriosis. Despite these health challenges, her desire to become a mother remains. She therefore consulted several specialists “to better understand what the best way is” to realize her dream of having a family of her own.

“Things didn’t go as planned,” Collins admits in her Instagram statement. She makes it clear that it wasn’t her athletic successes that motivated her to pursue her career, but rather her health challenges.

Collins wants to continue starting a family of his own

“Dealing with endometriosis and fertility is a huge challenge for many women, which I am actively tackling, but I have full confidence in the team I work with. “It’s just going to take longer than I thought,” she explains.

Without saying it explicitly, the current number eleven in the tennis world rankings suggests that her wish to start a family will not come true in the coming year. Therefore, she has decided to extend her career on the professional tour for another year: “The DANIMAL story (DANIMAL is her nickname; Anm. d. Red.) is not over yet. I will be back on the tour in 2025.”

Collins has had a successful season

Collins also commented on her sporting plans: “While there are no guarantees in life, I hope to build on the momentum of 2024 and keep playing until I have more certainty about my personal fertility journey. The only guarantee for now will be some more epic games”.

In the current season, Collins has already won the WTA tournaments in Miami and Charleston and temporarily made it back into the top 10 of the world rankings. However, since leaving the Olympics, she has struggled with injuries and has only competed in three tournaments since then. (kk)
