Félix Lebrun qualified Thursday for the quarter-finals of the international table tennis tournament (WTT) in Montpellier by dominating the Chinese Peng Xiang in four sets (11-3, 12-10, 5-11, 11-7)
On his home soil in Hérault, the 18-year-old world number 7 and double Olympic medalist in Paris (bronze in singles and doubles with his older brother Alexis) was jostled by the world number 26, aged 21, in the warm atmosphere of the ‘Arena de Montpellier, a 9,000-seat venue all acquired from the French. But Félix Lebrun ended up overtaking the Chinese who had dominated him in early October in the round of 16 during the WTT China Smash tournament in Beijing.
In the quarter-final of this first WTT tournament to take place in France, Félix Lebrun will meet the winner of the match scheduled for Friday between his brother Alexis, crowned European champion on Sunday, and the Swede Truls Moregard, Olympic vice-champion in Paris.
Early Thursday evening, French number one Jia Nan Yuan, 17th in the world, held a set against Taiwanese I-ching Cheng, 10th and seeded number 6, who finally won in four sets (11- 7, 6-11, 11-6, 11-5).
