Loum Tchaouna recorded a narrow victory with Lazio in the Europa League against FC Twente (0-2) on Thursday evening. The match in the Grolsch Veste had a very unpleasant ending for the 21-year-old attacker. Tchaouna was substituted in the final minutes and became visibly upset by noises he heard from the stands in Enschede.

Lazio played a won match after the early red card for Twente keeper Lars Unnerstall. Pedro gave the Italians the lead quite quickly after Unnerstall’s dismissal. Three minutes before the end it was decided via a goal by Gustav Isaksen.

Tchaouna was substituted in the 89th minute. The attacker became visibly upset on his way to the sideline and made it clear in words and gestures that he was being treated unpleasantly by supporters in the stands.

Tchaouna’s substitution moment was discussed afterwards Ziggo Sports. “Loum Tchaouna believes he has been treated racist by the Twente public,” said Hélène Hendriks. “If he heard that, it is of course right that he reacts that way.”

Lazio coach Marco Baroni confirms that it was a racist incident. “I don’t want to waste any more words on it. I think it’s terrible what happened,” said Baroni.

Theo Janssen supports Tchaouna. “This is absolutely not possible. This is not allowed. It is not allowed anywhere, but certainly not in the Netherlands. Act normally. If it has happened, they must tackle those guys really hard with a stadium ban for life.”

Hendriks adds that UEFA has started a preliminary investigation.
