This Wednesday morning, prominent personalities from the media entertainment, politics and sport came together within the framework of the 2024 State Sports Award. Where those present kept a minute of silence and gave applause in honor of the late baseball player Fernando Valenzuela.
At the event, the presence of the Lic. Debora Saenz Zaldívar, Director of Fideimss as well as the Senator Jesús Lucía Trasviña Waldenrath, Dr. Héctor Robles PeiroHead of the Social Benefits Unit, Ms. Blanca García Flores, Head of the Physical Culture and Sports Division; as well as María Juana Soto Santana, eight-time Paralympic gold medalist, Raúl González Rodríguez, two-time running medalist, and Prisca Guadalupe Awiti Alcaraz, silver medalist in judo at Paris 2024. Also present were Professor Francisco Cabeza Gutiérrez and Lic. Juan Bautista Gómez Moreno, president of the plenary session of the Sports Appeal and Arbitration Commission.
Mr. Héctor García Antonio pointed out that this event has the objective of giving impetus and management to the “National Physical Activation for Health Program”and thereby encourage sport to be one of the main tools for the prevention of chronic-degenerative diseases and the strengthening of the social fabric. The purpose of this jury explained the Technical Coordinator of Physical Culture and Sports, Héctor García Antonio “It is to reward the effort, perseverance and results of conventional and non-conventional athletes, coaches and technical staff, as well as interdisciplinary groups of the Institute that have stood out in the last year”in competitive sports at the IMSS.
He emphasized that, in past years, the Institute has distinguished itself by providing great athletes to the Central American, Pan American, World, Paralympic and Olympic Games as is the case of the already well-known Felipe el “Tibio” Muñoz, María José Alcalá, Carlos Girón, Jesús Mena, Fernando Platas, Amalia It is worth highlighting the presence of the Greatest Mexican Paralympic Athlete, María Juana Soto Santana, the double Olympic medalist in athletic walking at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympic Games, Raúl González Rodríguez and the silver Olympic medal judoka in Paris 2024, she is the first to obtain an Olympic medal in judo for Mexico in history, Prisca Awiti Alcaraz.
