Christian Wück complains after win against England – “Typical”

The <a href="https://www.archysport.com/2022/02/dfb-women-also-lose-against-england/" title="DFB women also lose against England“>DFB women won a hard-fought game against England. A subsequent question about this prompted national coach Christian Wück.

Christian Wück started with a victory as national coach of the German women’s national team. In the 4:3 (3:2) friendly against European champions England, three different players, Giulia Gwinn, Klara Bühl and Sara Däbritz, scored goals for the DFB team – and at the same time three players who do not play in the attacking position.

This in turn encouraged ARD presenter Claus Lufen to comment after the game that the DFB women could now play without former goalscorer Alexandra Popp. “Everyone said: It wouldn’t work without her,” said Lufen, who, referring to the time after Popp’s farewell game against Australia on Monday, followed up shortly afterwards: “And then everything that she always carried will be distributed on everyone’s shoulders?”

A question that apparently displeased the new national coach. He reacted slightly irritably: “It’s typically German again to see everything in black and white.” Of course, it hurts the team “that a Poppi, a Marina Hegering and a Merle Frohms have quit. It’s not ideal for us, but you have to accept it,” Wück continued, also referring to two other former DFB players. Top performers who are no longer available to him after their resignations.

Then he turned the tables: “You can also look at it positively: you can say that the players gave their best for Germany over a very long period of time and now others are following suit.” That’s exactly what his team proved today, “that we have a lot of talent,” said Wück. Then he actually went into raptures about his team’s performance against England: “To be 3-0 up after 30 minutes – I’m even at a loss for words.”

On Monday he could possibly start the next hymn of praise for his team. Then the DFB women continue with the next test match in Duisburg. In Wück’s home debut against Australia (from 6:10 p.m. in the t-online live ticker), long-time captain Popp will play her 145th and final international match. Central defender Hegering and goalkeeper Frohms are also said farewell, but without further action.
