The FSV Mainz 05 and Borussia Mönchengladbach drew 1-1 (0-0) at the start of the eighth matchday of the Bundesliga. Mainz was the stronger team for a long time and took the lead thanks to an own goal from Stefan Lainer (55th minute), but shortly afterwards Tim Kleindienst equalized with his sixth goal of the season for the guests, who improved in the second half (57th). Mönchengladbach has been waiting for two league wins in a row within one season for over two and a half years.
Due to the draw, Gerardo Seoane’s team is temporarily in ninth place in the table and therefore ahead of Mainz, who are still in twelfth for the time being. Even after their fifth home game this season, the Rheinhessen team missed out on their first win in their own stadium.
The Gladbachers started the game convincingly defensively – but at the expense of their offensive game. Instead, the home team looked for a way forward, Nadiem Amiri failed three times with long-range shots at the start. However, in the 19th minute, attacker Jonathan Burkardt was substituted due to injury, a setback for the Zero Fives. In front of 33,000 spectators, Mainz’s chances piled up, but Moritz Jenz headed over the goal after an Amiri free kick (26th). Because the subsequent opportunities remained unused, both sides had zero at the break.
After the break, Mainz kept the tempo high and restricted Gladbach. After a cross from Paul Nebel, Lainer scored into his own goal and gave the hosts the deserved lead. But the 1-0 score didn’t last long. After a perfect cross from Franck Honorat, the new national player Kleindienst scored with a header. It was the 29-year-old’s sixth goal of the season. Now Gladbach also took part in the game offensively, in the 64th minute Kleindienst was denied by Mainz keeper Robin Zentner. Both teams missed great chances to score the winning goal.
