Burkardt out injured
Mainz cannot defeat Heimfluch against Gladbach either
October 25, 2024, 10:40 p.m
FSV Mainz 05 has long been the better team against Borussia Mönchengladbach. But once again there was no home win in the Bundesliga. The duel between the two new national players only takes place briefly because Mainz’s best attacker to date, Jonathan Burkardt, has to be replaced due to injury.
The 22nd attempt was also unsuccessful: Borussia Mönchengladbach once again failed to follow up a victory in the Bundesliga with a second three-pointer. The foals couldn’t get past a 1-1 (0-0) draw at FSV Mainz 05 in the evening.
Mainz was the better team for a long time and took the lead thanks to an own goal from Stefan Lainer (55th), but shortly afterwards Tim Kleindienst equalized with his sixth goal of the season for the guests, who improved in the second half (57th). Mönchengladbach has been waiting for two league wins in a row within one season for over two and a half years – now the dark series continues.
Thanks to the draw, Gerardo Seoane’s team temporarily moved up to ninth place in the table and was able to at least hold their own ahead of Mainz, who are still in twelfth place for the time being. The Rheinhessen are still waiting for their first win in their own stadium after their fifth home game this season.
Both teams score winning goals
“The basis will be to stand compactly and accept the fight in our defensive work,” Seoane had given the route before the game. The Gladbachers initially managed to do this – even if their offensive game suffered as a result. Instead, the home team looked for a way forward, Nadiem Amiri failed three times with long-range shots at the start.
The Zero Fives then suffered a setback in the 19th minute when Mainz attacker Jonathan Burkardt, who had been the best to date with five goals, had to be replaced due to injury. His teammates remained the more active team afterwards, cheered on by extremely enthusiastic fans who expressed their longing for a home win with a choreo before kick-off.
The chances for Mainz increased, Moritz Jenz headed over the goal after an Amiri free kick (26th). However, because the subsequent opportunities remained unused, both sides had zero at the break.
In the second half, events came to a head: First Stefan Lainer maneuvered a cross from Paul Nebel into his own goal, shortly afterwards new national player Kleindienst equalized for the guests with a header. Now Gladbach also took part offensively in the lively game, Kleindienst failed against Mainz keeper Robin Zentner (64th). It was now an open game in which both teams missed great chances to score the winning goal.
