BVB coach Nuri Sahin: “The fact is that we didn’t manage it”

BVB loses in Augsburg and sinks into mediocrity in the Bundesliga. Nuri Sahin is under enormous pressure early in the season. Dortmund’s sports director Sebastian Kehl demonstratively supports the young coach.

Nuri Sahin’s announcement before the game was unmistakable. After the heavy 2:5 defeat in the Champions League at Real Madrid, the coach of Borussia Dortmund demanded a reaction from his team in the Bundesliga. “Today it’s important to finally get the three points,” was Sahin’s clear demand in the Sky interview before kick-off at FC Augsburg.

The BVB coach was bitterly disappointed by his team, BVB lost 1:2 after a disappointing performance and is only mediocre in the Bundesliga. Sahin was deeply disappointed with the performance after a dream start with an early 1-0 win for his team. He particularly complained about the goals conceded after “unforced errors”.

We now have to “stand up to the situation and go through it together,” warned the coach, who called the BVB fans’ whistles at the end of the game understandable. “It’s our turn! We are the ones who have to deliver – just us!”

Sahin, who has only been head coach in Dortmund since last summer, experienced his first crisis with BVB after the eighth matchday. “I have been at this club for ten months. The fact is that we didn’t manage to do that. The wind is blowing, that’s normal. We’re trying to analyze and regenerate and get eleven people on the pitch on Tuesday who are healthy. We don’t live up to the demands that we have, that we set for ourselves, and that’s simply a fact.”

“Complete trust, no question at all”

Before the cup game next Tuesday at VfL Wolfsburg (8:45 p.m., in the WELT live ticker), sports director Sebastian Kehl supported Sahin and tried to focus the responsibility on the team. “In the end, the responsibilities are already on the pitch,” said Kehl. He had “complete trust in Sahin, no question about it,” Kehl also told Sky.

“We march on together and are completely behind it,” said Kehl about the 36-year-old Sahin and his meticulous work. The sports director announced a further critical review. BVB has now lost three of four away league games this season. There is also a draw. “We are lagging behind in the league,” said Kehl worriedly.

Sahin will probably have to do without three other players in the cup. Waldemar Anton (abdominals and hips) and Julian Ryerson (adductors) as well as midfielder Marcel Sabitzer (back) had to leave the field early in Augsburg. “I don’t think they’re playing,” said Sahin, referring to the DFB Cup. “If things don’t go well, something like that will happen,” said Sahin, referring to the ever-growing list of failures at BVB. The coach announced that they would still try to “get one round further in Wolfsburg.”
