Shohei Ohtani injures his left arm when he slips on the second cushion

Los Angeles Dodgers superstar Shohei Ohtani injured his left arm while attempting to steal second base in the seventh inning of Game 2 of the World Series on Saturday against the New York Yankees.

Ohtani clutched his left forearm after being hit by shortstop Anthony Volpe for the final out of the inning.

He remained lying near the cushion for a few minutes before receiving first aid from sports therapists and leaving the playing surface.

The severity of the injury was not immediately clear.

Fox Sports reporter Ken Rosenthal reported from the Dodgers dugout that it was Ohtani’s left shoulder that was causing him trouble.

Ohtani, possibly the favorite to be voted the National League’s most valuable player, was hitless in three official visits to the plate on Saturday, but drew a walk.

At the time of the injury, the Dodgers were leading 4-1. They eventually posted a 4-2 victory to take a 2-0 lead in the best of seven series.

Ohtani has one hit in eight at-bats since the start of the World Series.

Since the start of the playoff games, his first career in major baseball, he has posted a batting average of .260 with three home runs and 10 RBIs.

Most of Ohtani’s injuries since arriving in the majors in 2018 have been related to his role as a pitcher, including major surgeries to his right elbow in 2018 and last year.

The Japanese didn’t pitch this year, but he became the first player in major league history to hit at least 50 home runs and 50 stolen bases in a season.

In September 2019, Ohtani underwent surgery on his left kneecap due to a rare, congenital condition.

Ohtani missed the 2017 World Baseball Classic after undergoing ankle surgery due to an injury suffered during the 2016 Japan Series.
