Sainz Says ‘Less to Lose’ in High-Stakes Turn 1: What It Means for the Race

Carlos Sainz will be hunting for his second victory of the season in Mexico today. He starts on pole position, and even though this is not the most favorable starting position on this track, he goes all out for the win. He also knows that title rivals Max Verstappen and Lando Norris will look at each other.

Sainz and his employer Ferrari have had an almost flawless weekend in Mexico so far. In qualifying, Sainz drove some formidable laps, which earned him pole position. Normally this is a favorable starting point, but in Mexico this is not always the case. The run to the first corner is very long, so it becomes a slipstream game. If you start in first place, there will be no one in front of you to slipstream, so Sainz has to be smart.

To trust

The Spanish driver goes into the race with a good feeling. Sainz is fully committed to victory and he answers positively when asked during the press conference whether he is looking forward to the race with confidence: “Yes, I have quite a lot of confidence because I know that my race pace is normally good. The most difficult part will probably be the run to the first corner. I think you can still defend and get it done in Turn 1 if you start on pole. That will be my biggest goal for the race.”

Less to lose

Starting on pole in Mexico may require a different approach to the race, but Sainz is not thinking about that. He is therefore asked how different his approach to the start will be: “Not very different actually. I have to make sure that I go from zero to one hundred well, that is the most important thing when you start on pole. You have to have a good jump Then I have to do my best to defend. I have two guys behind me who are fighting for important things, so the run to turn 1 will obviously be interesting. That way I have less to lose and I have to try to get that first one to hold a place.”
