Coach Carlos Fernández is “frankly satisfied” with the result after more than a decade without reaching the top of the podium in the category.
The second day of the Villa de Avilés International Grand Event Tournament has served Judo Club Avilés to get rid of the Spanish Cadet Super Cup. Two golds and a bronze have helped the Aviles team to return to the path of victory. Nicolas Fernández in -42kg and Valeria Coronado in -44kg, in addition to a third place for Ángel Miguélez in -38kg, leave their coach Carlos Fernández more than satisfied.
“The work we are doing has been seen on the tatami. It is perfect for that category and is part of the project and trying to rebuild generations that return us to the place we occupied at the time. That confidence that we have in these categories has been highlighted,” argued Fernández.
The truth is that, until now, the calendar had not accompanied Judo Club Avilés. “We came from Santander and we are very close to the medals in general terms, although we got one with Adriana Coronado, and I was happy, but now we have managed to take that step of reaching the top. In addition to the role of Nicolás Fernández, Valeria Coronado and Ángel Miguélez, I want to highlight the role of Adriana Coronado, who has not been so brilliant. “That puts us on the right path,” he assured.
The coach does not hide that “the results help make work easy, we have to take advantage of that.” However, he also warns that “I am convinced that if we had obtained other results, the work is still fantastic, above all, because we handle such important aspects as the emotional component.”
The Avilesinos once again reign supreme at home and the coach recognizes that they have added value. “Winning at home is more difficult because managing the heads of these generations is complicated. Sometimes, local competition is a double responsibility, which is why I value these triumphs more.”
For their part, the two protagonists were also satisfied. For Fernández, the feeling “is inexplicable, something that I have wanted and dreamed of since I was little. It is an emotion that is difficult to describe.” However, despite the satisfaction, the Avilesino believes that there is always room for improvement “in aspects such as travel.” Fernández pointed out that he had to make an effort to reach the top because “all the rivals come prepared, but they have failed.”
For Valeria Coronado, winning at home has been “crazy.” The woman from Castrillon has assured that she is “very proud, happy and grateful for everything that has happened. Very happy with my role.” The truth is that she has not had an easy situation: “I was nervous, but I knew how to control it. I have had very tough fights, I made some mistakes but I knew how to focus and get the victory.”
