Since 2011, the International Judo Federation has launched World Judo Day or, in English, World Judo Day. This day takes place every October 28.

Each day is dedicated to a particular theme.
In 2011, for the first edition, the aim was to emphasize the respect in the practice of this sport.

In 2012, the chosen theme was Judo for all : as the president of the IFJ (Marius Vizer) states, “Regardless of where you come from, your social situation, your gender, your physical or mental abilities, everyone can get on a mat with equal opportunities and without any difference in consideration.“.

Do you know Jigoro Kano?

You guessed it, Master Jigoro Kano (1860 – 1938) is the creator of judo in 1882.

After having learned, in his childhood, some basics of ju-jitsu to resist the bullying of comrades physically stronger than him, he founded, in 1882 – at the age of only 22 – the Kodokan, a place dedicated to teaching the “Way” based on the principles of modern sports.

He thus developed the first modern martial art whose objective was no longer to fight victoriously but to elevate man to serve humanity.

Kano adapts Jujitsu to the new era.
Its vocation was to quickly and effectively put an attacker out of harm’s way.
Kano transforms it into a means of educating the body and mind. He renamed his discipline Ju-do (the Way of flexibility), and thus founded what would become modern judo.
