Kick-off, a short sprint, and Rafael Silva knocks his opponent down with his elbow. The game in Brazil’s first football league between Athletico Paranaense from Curitiba and Cruzeiro EC from Belo Horizonte was all of three seconds old when the visiting striker got carried away with violence. Referee Rodrigo Pereira had no choice but to show Silva a red card.
The 34-year-old knocked his opponent Kaique Rocha to the ground with full force when he got in his way. Silva made his comeback for Cruzeiro in a 0:3 (0:1) defeat after more than four months of injury.
Shortly after the end of the game, sports director Alexandre Mattos announced a fine “within what the laws allow”. On social networks, many angry fans vehemently called for the attacker to be fired immediately. (SID/edited by lh)
