The German handball players will play at the 2027 home World Cup in Munich and Cologne. The association is surprised by the selection of the four other venues.

Two proven locations and four new venues: The 2027 Handball World Cup will take place in six German cities. Hanover, Kiel, Cologne, Magdeburg, Munich and Stuttgart will be the venues for the home tournament with 32 participants. “These venues combine a lot of what defines us: They are centers of the Bundesliga, they stand for tradition, but also for modernity. With this great infrastructure, we are ready for another highlight in the decade of handball,” said DHB President Andreas Michelmann at the presentation.

After 1938, 1958, 1961, 1974, 1982, 2007 and 2019, Germany is hosting a men’s World Cup for the eighth time. National coach Alfred Gislason’s selection will play their preliminary round games in Munich and, if they qualify, will play the main round games in Cologne. The medals are also awarded in the German handball temple with a capacity of almost 20,000 spectators. Kiel, Magdeburg and Stuttgart are the other preliminary round locations, Hanover is the second main round location.

Gislason is looking forward to the next handball festival

The national coach expects a similarly atmospheric handball festival to the last one at the home European Championships in January this year. “There is no nation that can do this better than Germany. Everyone in the world knows that,” said Gislason and praised: “German virtues like planning are not a myth. This is on a different level than anywhere else.”

It starts on January 13th or 14th, 2027. The final takes place on January 31st. The final game plan is still being coordinated with the International Handball Federation. The first three of the eight preliminary round groups with four teams each reach the main round.

“Especially with the venues Kiel, Magdeburg, Hanover and Stuttgart, we are addressing the fans of the handball Bundesliga. Munich is a location with a great tradition and offered an outstanding fan experience at the 2019 World Cup and the 2024 European Championship. And Cologne represents world handball “, DHB CEO Mark Schober explained the selection of venues and affirmed: “We aim to show handball all over Germany.”
