Horner puts pressure on Perez: “A moment of difficult decisions will come”

Sergio Perez had a disastrous weekend in his home country Mexico. A lot went wrong and the frustration was very great. He was the last to cross the line in seventeenth place. Red Bull team boss Christian Horner is now increasing the pressure and he states that there comes a time when difficult decisions have to be made.

Perez has been under pressure at Red Bull for months. In Mexico he finally wanted to strike back, but that plan failed in qualifying. He dropped out in Q1, had to start from the back of the field and then made a mistake right at the start of the race. He was incorrectly positioned in his grid position and that immediately earned him a five-second time penalty. In the race he damaged his car in a duel with Liam Lawson. Perez rode a lost race and finished seventeenth.

Dramatic weekend

This only increased the pressure on Perez. Red Bull team boss Horner now also wants to see results. After the race he was very clear in talking to the international media: “It was another dramatic weekend for Checo. Things didn’t go well for him. He knows that Formula 1 is all about results. If you don’t deliver, you get the spotlight on you. If the results are not forthcoming, you will be looked at critically. As a team we have to score points with both cars.”

Difficult decisions

It is no secret that Perez’s position is under pressure. There is a lot of speculation about a driver change for next year. When Horner is asked whether Perez will finish the season anyway, he does not immediately respond in the affirmative: “As I said, there is always a critical eye. And there comes a time when difficult decisions have to be made. We are now third among the constructors. “The team is working as hard as possible to support him and we will continue to do so next weekend in Brazil. But there comes a time when you can’t do more than that.”
