Abia State to host two Para-Badminton C’ships in 2025 – Orbih

The President of Badminton Federation of Nigeria, Francis Orbih revealed that plans are underway for Abia State to host two Para-Badminton Championships in 2025.

Orbih told www.aclsports.com that Nigeria applied to host the first International Para-Badminton Championship and the hosting right was granted.

The Badminton Confederation Africa (BCA) council member said the impact of Nigeria’s para-badminton athletes on the international scene gave the country better leverage.

He said, “This year (2024), the Nigeria Para-Badminton Commission through the Badminton Federation of Nigeria bid to host the first International Para-Badminton Championship next year in Abia State and the world body granted hosting rights.

“In addition, Nigeria will host the All-African Para Badminton Championship next year. It will be the first time Nigeria will host such an event. We have never done it before, but our impact in Para-Badminton in Africa shows the world that it is the right time to bring the event to Nigeria and the Badminton Confederation of Africa (BCA) has been supportive,” Orbih emphasised.

Orbih noted that Eniola Bolaji’s performance at the Paralympics marked a turning point for para-badminton in Nigeria.

He said, “African Champion, Eniola Bolaji, the celebrated athlete, became a beacon of hope for aspiring para-athletes after winning a bronze medal at the Paris 2024 Paralympics. Her achievements not only inspired many to take up the sport but also highlighted the potential of para-badminton in Nigeria.

“With her triumph, Bolaji solidified her legacy as a pioneer of para-badminton in Nigeria. The Olympic bronze medal marked a turning point for para-badminton in Nigeria; inspiring a new generation of athletes.”
