The NBA has fined the Philadelphia 76ers $100,000. The reason for this is public statements about the health of All-NBA center Joel Embiid. A league investigation found that while the Sixers did not violate player participation guidelines, their public statements did not adequately reflect Embiid’s true health.
Inconsistent statements from Morey and Nurse
In its statement, the NBA said that statements made by Daryl Morey, president of basketball operations, and coach Nick Nurse “were inconsistent with Joel Embiid’s medical condition and violated NBA rules.” The league confirmed that Embiid has been unable to play so far this season due to a “left knee issue.”
Bad luck with injuries for the Sixers
In addition to Embiid, newcomer Paul George has not yet played a game for Philadelphia. George is suffering from a bone bruise in his left knee. The Sixers announced on Tuesday that both players participated in part of practice but will not be available for their upcoming game against the Detroit Pistons.
The situation surrounding the Sixers’ injuries and public statements remains tense as the team tries to find its footing in the new season.
