Borussia Dortmund‘s crisis has worsened further. After recent disappointments in the German Bundesliga and the Champions League, BVB was also knocked out of the DFB Cup in the second round. Dortmund had to admit defeat to VfL Wolfsburg 0-1 after extra time on Tuesday. Meanwhile, Christoph Baumgartner shone with a goal and an assist as RB Leipzig advanced to the round of 16.

While Dortmund suffered the next setback, Wolfsburg coach Ralph Hasenhüttl was able to celebrate a home win, as did offensive player Patrick Wimmer, who was on the pitch until the 70th minute. For the losers, the ailing Marcel Sabitzer came on as a substitute in the 99th minute; he was not uninvolved in the decisive goal from “Joker” Jonas Wind (116th) due to a lost duel. For BVB, a series of 13 round of 16 appearances came to an end with their third competitive defeat in a row.

The two-time cup winners RB Leipzig, on the other hand, are in the round of the last 16 teams. However, the Saxons had to tremble at times against Bundesliga newcomers FC St. Pauli, but in the end they prevailed 4:2 (3:1). Baumgartner played a large part in the success. The ÖFB team player scored an unchallenged header to make it 2-0 in the 17th minute and also set up double goal scorer Yussuf Poulsen to make it 3-1.

Baumgartner played a crucial role in Leipzig’s 4-2 win against St. Pauli

Baumgartner was replaced in the 69th minute, Nicolas Seiwald and Xaver Schlager were still missing due to injuries. David Nemetz was only a substitute for the losers. Poulsen once again showed himself to be a DFB Cup specialist, after 34 appearances he has 14 goals and 15 assists. Leipzig is doing better than last season, when it was eliminated in round two.

Leverkusen keep going easily

Defending champion Bayer Leverkusen showed no weakness in their 3-0 home win against second division team SV Elversberg. Striker Patrik Schick with a brace (2nd, 9th) and Aleix Garcia (36th/free kick) made everything clear before the break. Stuttgart, on the other hand, defeated last year’s finalist Kaiserslautern 2-1 (1-1) after a tough fight.

FC Augsburg also reached the round of 16 with a 3-0 win against struggling second division club Schalke 04. While the Augsburg team celebrated their next success three days after their league home win against Borussia Dortmund, Schalke conceded in the third competitive game under new coach Kees van Wonderen’s third defeat.

Cologne throws Kiel out

The last remaining regional league team, Kickers Offenbach, lost 2-0 to second division team Karlsruher SC (without Christoph Kobald). Two other second division teams have already been confirmed as round of 16 teams. 1. FC Köln won surprisingly clearly 3-0 (1-0) in front of their home crowd against newly promoted first division Holstein Kiel. In the pure second division duel, SSV Jahn Regensburg beat SpVgg in the first game after the dismissal of coach Joe Enochs Greuther Fürth won 1-0 (0-0) despite being long outnumbered. The round of 16 will take place on the 3rd/4th. Played in December, the draw follows on Sunday.
