The San Francisco 49ers and their fans are in shock: Amani Joy, the one-year-old daughter of cornerback Charvarius Ward, has died after a long battle with heart problems. She would have celebrated her second birthday in November.

Ward shared the heartbreaking news with his followers on Instagram, writing alongside a picture of the girl: “We are heartbroken that our beautiful little girl, Amani Joy, passed away on Monday morning.”

He added: “She was the best blessing we could have asked for.” Ward also highlighted how Amani Joy enriched her parents’ lives despite her health challenges: “She showed us true strength and courage. Despite her young age, she overcame many obstacles and lit up every room with her smile.”

Ward concluded: “The privilege of having her as a child and seeing the world through her eyes has changed us for the better. She will forever be daddy’s best friend and mommy’s little girl. We will miss you and love you forever, Amani Joy.” The 49ers commented on the post: “Sending love.”

In his story, the cornerback shared a black background with red broken hearts on it. In a previous Instagram post from this spring, Ward wrote that his daughter has Down syndrome.
