Max Verstappen and Lando Norris have regularly clashed on track this season and on Sunday the bomb exploded in Mexico City. Verstappen was given a twenty-second penalty by the race management, but he shrugs it off and jokes that it could be even more.
It was time for the twentieth race of the season on Sunday afternoon and it became one of the most remarkable races of the season. Carlos Sainz won the Grand Prix, but there was a lot to experience behind it. Once again, Lando Norris and Max Verstappen played a leading role. Early in the race, the pair came into contact with each other on the track – not for the first time this season. The two drivers again had a tough battle, with Verstappen going way over the line according to the race management and receiving no less than a twenty-second penalty.
Thirty seconds
After the race, the Dutchman of course appeared in the media pen to talk about his remarkable ride in the country of teammate Sergio Pérez. The main question was which Verstappen we would see in front of the cameras, but he held back quite a bit for most channels. Yet he was able to discuss it with, among others DAZN in Fox Sports not refraining from dealing with the punishment in a somewhat sarcastic manner: “Maybe next time we can go for thirty seconds,” we hear Verstappen say laughing. “Maybe we can break the record. It is what it is. I’m not going to cry about the penalties. I’ll take it and move on,” says the world champion.
Horner much less mild
However, Verstappen’s words were in stark contrast to what Horner had to say after the race: “Max left the track in turn four and then in turn seven. Lando opened the door very late and they both went off there. The problem is that we are now starting to get into very dangerous territory. At what point is it okay to have a divebomb to do? I think it is time for the FIA and the drivers to look together at what is acceptable and what is not. I think the two ten-second penalties were a bit on the heavy side,” said Red Bull’s British team boss.
