MONTREAL – It was supposed to be a holiday for the entire hockey world. Eventually, the selection was narrowed down to the elite countries and the World Cup became just a Four Nations Tournament.
Already in February 2025, the two overseas cities of Montreal and Boston will host a tournament called the 4 Nations Face-off. Originally, a renewed version of the World Cup was supposed to be held this year, but the NHL swept these plans off the table for the time being, and only four national teams – Finland, Sweden, the USA and Canada – received an invitation.
The representatives of the league plan to restore the past glory of the World Cup, and in the future it could be added to the calendar to alternate with the Winter Olympics. In what format and with what teams, it is not yet known.
However, players from countries such as the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Switzerland and Germany will not appear at the prestigious tournament. Thus, they will not follow up on the successful cooperation from 2016, when the Selection of Europe with our hockey players reached the finals, where they later lost to the favored Canada.

The new tournament format will consist of a total of seven matches played over nine days from February 12 to February 20. Four games will be hosted at the Bell Center in Montreal and three games, including the championship game, will be played at the TD Garden in Boston.
All 4 Nations Face-off matches will be played in accordance with NHL rules. Each team will play three tournament matches in the traditional format according to the following points system:
3 points for a regular time win, 2 points for an overtime/shootout win, 1 point for an overtime/shootout loss and 0 points for a regular time loss. The two teams with the best tournament record will then advance to the one-game final.
The NHL, as the organizer, published the prices and launched ticket sales for the several-day event. The cheapest match will be between Finland and Sweden. Tickets for this duel cost between 104 and 350 Canadian dollars (69 – 230 euros).
If you would like to see the biggest stars of the USA and Canada, you will have to pay a lot more. A seat under the roof in the home arena of the Canadiens costs more than €360. You will pay up to €955 for a seat at the interchanges.
