Struff lost his first service game, but subsequently had four opportunities to get back into the game on both Fils’ third and fourth service. But his 20-year-old opponent played great at times, especially under pressure. The local hero, who was cheered on frenetically by the Paris audience, brought the match coolly through in the second round after another early break.

Overall, Struff made too many simple mistakes. The Warsteiner reached the second round with a 6:4, 6:2 against Olympic bronze medalist Lorenzo Musetti, who had eliminated Alexander Zverev at the tournament in Vienna the previous week, as he had done at the Olympic Games. Last week, Struff failed in three sets against his opening hurdle Alex de Minaur (Australia) in the Austrian capital.
